Water Activities in Thailand
Diving and Snorkeling
Crystal clear water, abundant sea life, a tropical climate, good transport and accommodation and a high standard of diving classes make Thailand the ultimate diving destination.
The diving classes are comparatively cheap, and once you have achieved your certification in Thailand, you can use it to go scuba-diving all over the world.
Diving is available at all times of the year, although visibility changes according to the season. In the Andaman Sea, the best time to dive is from October to April, and in the Gulf of Thailand from May to September. At recommended dive sites in Thailand the water is so clear that the underwater world is visible from the surface.
Snorkeling trips and lessons are available in Phuket, Koh Samui and other beach destinations. Basically, wherever there are small islands, you can bet there is a tour company that will be able to take you on a boat ride as well as recommend great snorkeling sites.
Rafting and Kayaking/Sea Canoeing
A major attraction for most rafters and kayakers is to travel into the very heart of the unspoiled wilderness. With water adventure sports, you can go from an extreme adventure to a relaxing type in Thailand: rafting on the wild river up North, or paddling in a kayak through a tranquil lagoon surrounded by limestone cliffs.
Best locations for rafting are in the northern areas like Chiang Mai, Mae Hong Son and Nan. Although rafting is a year round sport, the optimum time for rocking and rolling on the river is from June to October.
Canoeing and kayaking can be done in both the open sea and rivers and watercrafts are available for rent at most beach destinations. Suitable places for these activities are Phang-nga Bay with limestone islands and sea caves in lagoons and Tarutao National Park in the Andaman archipelago, which consists of 51 islands.
